Storyboard

movies art black and white hoppip alice in wonderland

Personally, I don't really find story boarding helpful for the way I plan my music video. I tend to think more on the spot, however a storyboard would aid me with guidance, whereas on a shot by shot basis I feel it may restrict me.

Sources of Inspiration

Avril Lavigne - Official Alice

The dark side to Alice and wonderland is something which I may grab ideas from. I like all of the ideas behind it.
Alice and Wonderland (1951) Official Trailer

I'm particularly taking influence from certain aspects of characters and scenes. Such as the caterpillar, which also is made reference to in the lyrics of my song. I want to use a smoke machine in my video at some point in order to convey this reference and metaphor.
Tove Lo - Not on Drugs

I love the use of the smoke grenades, I may buy some to incorporate into my video. I have looked at some websites and they are relatively cheap.

Target Audience Research

Here's a small presentation recording my findings.

Focus Group

As can be seen from the video, all of my focus group are 18. This is key for a variable, as I will only be analysing the different opinions and beliefs of this age group. They are also all in the E bracket of social groups due to them being students and only working part-time at best. Therefore they have a lack of disposable income.

Liam (on the right)  usually listens to RnB however he enjoys indie as well as Rnb. The other two are keen listeners of the indie genre, this can be noted by what they are wearing (the signature checked shirts).
They thought that the most important conventions of an indie pop music video is to be a hybrid genre - containing both conceptual and performance based elements.
Nathan suggests that I had to be abstract in order to appeal and relate to my target audience, who would be listening to this. Nathan wanted to see some key mise-en-scene choices and to be directly related to the genre and the music. Liam prefers when the video has a deeper meaning behind it to the point where it makes no sense.

Mad Hatter
Love Hearts
Queen of Hearts

They would like to see fast-paced editing style with my video, because it reflects the song choice very much. 'its weird so its got to be fast'.

They would expect to see my music video in the woods as this is a stereotype of alice and wonderland, they definately want to see the video to be outside in order to give the illusion of Wonderland. However, Liam did mention it to be a very dark sort of video, as in the backdrop should be completely black, I may consider this when I plan my locations.

Costume wise they would expect to see heavy makeup, vintage style clothing, typical blue dress for Alice and Liam even mentioned a Rabbits Head (little does he know I have already bought it) !

Initial ideas

INITIAL IDEAS

1st Idea

The idea of the main protagonist being in prison. Or potentially an insane asylum.

The idea that all of these people in her head being her friends are figures of her imagination. She used to watch Alice and Wonderland as a child and feels that she is Alice. The main story-line would be that of her explaining her feelings to a councilor. The ideas she has in her mind stem down to a deep mental illness which is incapable of treating. Or potentially, she may actually be Alice from Wonderland and she is telling the truth, although no one believes her as it is too hard to imagine to be true. With her being in prison, she committed the crime of attacking people for thinking they were characters from Wonderland. The basic idea is that there is a female, who is the main singer, she is in deep pain internally and mentally. The theme would be dark and sinister and maybe even violent.

2nd Idea

She is a teenage reject, she spends time reading books and being isolated. Not the stereotypical teenager she is shunned and taunted at school. However she has one friend who has no idea about her anger management issues and depression. She lashes out and her friend turns her back on her. The whole idea is that she attends a self help group and she feels 'sane' around them. Rather than being looked at by all of her school associates as being crazy for giving her best friend a black eye. She accepts who she is and eventually puts two fingers up to the people who bullied her (hypothetically speaking) and stays true to herself without conforming to the stereotypical girl in secondary school.

3rd Idea

Drug related.

The idea being that, she is totally addicted to drugs and cannot think straight anymore. Schizophrenic girl who takes drugs in order to be with her friends from wonderland. Alice and wonderland related from the things she sees when she is high on drugs. In the real world she is on her own and is seen as a loner (cloning techniques) . However when she is on drugs she feels accepted. This idea may prove valuable for special effects of being on drugs and may actually end up giving a positive message which is the dominant (Stuart Hall) to the main audience. My main audience being 16-29 year olds, drug awareness is invaluable. Also it will prove to be interesting with costumes and effects.

Alice and Wonderland

I watched Alice and Wonderland (1951) animation film. It has allowed me to come up with different ideas about what to include into my music video, such as the singing flowers, the Dodo bird, or the lizard chimney sweep.
